Had that game been held in a PPV world and based on the model I read, fans
in Ohio and Michigan would get the game via traditional model on Fox. I don't believe the AD revenue would be near as high (4 to 5 million) for ads being directed at a much smaller population although I would concede that there would be a much higher % of viewership than in say the state of Texas.
so let's assume that FOX gets a small piece of the Amazon revenue from the PPV audience at $20+ per clip. Even with both schools large alumni base outside of those states that migrate elsewhere for jobs, what percent of those are going to care about watching the game. I'd suggest that those ex-pat fans would invite a group of likekind friends over for a viewing party and that a large % of those alumni just wouldn't care at to great a price. Sure the PPV model might charge a Sports Watching Bar more than a standard residential customer, but how would that be monitored? No, even in the PPV model, I'd expect as many if not more commercials. Currently that entire revenue stream is based on viewership which will go down in PPV model even for the most popular teams. The only answer is marketers paying for commercials, It happened to cable and satellite tv channels and I don't see PPV being able to produce enough revenue without them
